Interesting Albums from 2024

At this time every December we enjoy chatting in the shop about albums we’ve enjoyed over the past year. Below you can find a link to a compilation of titles that we think are worth checking out. Note that we are not music critics – and this is not a top ten list! Just a few albums that you may have missed and might like. Feel free to share some of your own discoveries from 2024.

Bad Omens – CONCRETE JUNGLE (THE OST) (Metal / Pop)

As a continuation of the Virginia metalcore band’s prior album, The Death of Piece of Mind, this is a massive 26-song album. It features a handful of new singles, remixes, live performances, and collaborations with artists such as Poppy and HEALTH.

Kenny Barron – Beyond This Place (Jazz)

At 80 years old  Kenny Barron is likely the greatest jazz pianist still playing. His latest album showcases his versatility and mastery of different styles of jazz as a quintet, and is a special recording worth discovering.

Bilmuri – American Motor Sports (420cc Edition) (Pop / Rock)

This Ohio-based indie band adds country to the list of genres they tap into, which already included emo, hardcore, electronica, and math rock.

Zach Bryan – The Great American Bar Scene (Americana / Folk)

The fifth studio album by Oklahoma singer-songwriter and country crossover star Zach Bryan, with contributions by Bruce Springsteen and John Mayer.

The Cure – Songs of A Lost World (Alternative)

Regardless of 16 years passing since their last album, the gothic rock band pick up where they left off with a dark, moody album that may rank as one of their finest.

Don Glori – Don’t Forget To Have Fun (Jazz)

Don Glori is the pseudonym for London-by-way-of-Melbourne artist Gordon Li. The wild confluence of jazz, funk, and soul make his sophomore album truly unique and consistently engaging.

Jamie xx – In Waves (Electronic)

The front man of The xx is back with a rousing selection of atmospheric electronic songs. A very satisfying album, given it’s his first in five years

King Hannah – Big Swimmer (Indie / Pop)

The Liverpool-based duo of Hanna Merrick and Craig Whittle recorded this album live in a single room with producer Ali Chant, and the intimacy is immediately felt. Filled with big sounds, it’s an album to get lost in.

Kendrick Lamar – GNX (Rap)

After a summer defined by his rap battle with Drake, Kendrick Lamar releases an incredibly timely and topical album showcasing his dynamic talent.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra  – Schubert Symphonies Nos 5 & (Classical)

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and its conductor Maxim Emelyanychev continue their survey of Schubert’s orchestral music. Critics love the performance, saying “Emelyanychev’s approach is refreshingly direct and uncomplicated. [He] guides the music as if from within, prioritising the natural flow of Schubert’s notes without remotely soft-pedalling any of the drama.”  Recorded and produced by Phil Hobbs and Linn Records, so the sound quality is of course fantastic.

Thee Sacred Souls – Got A Story To Tell (Alternative / R&B)

Drenched in the familiar sounds of vintage soul, this sounds like a record that could have been written in the 70’s for Marvin Gaye. Tons of fun throwback vibes from San Diego, CA.

Gillian Welch & David Rawlings – Woodland Studios (Indie / Folk)

After performing together for over 30 years, the duo’s classic folk sound combining Appalachian and traditional Americana music has never sounded better. To make the situation even sweeter, the album was recorded in Nashville on analog master tape.
